Nanyang Modern Dance Costume Designs

So we have HAT FULL OF STARS 2 this coming April :D yay!

Modern Dance costume design — lyrical dress    Modern Dance costume design — hip hop     Modern Dance design — chair

and along with some others in the aesthetics committee, we designed some costumes. So I designed costumes for a lyrical number, a hip hop number and a chair :D for the lyrical number.

The first design for the lyrical number was accepted, yay. but it was to be changed to matte silver. I think chiffon would be better than just matte satin, but no choice, have to follow instructions. Unfortunately, i didn’t scan the edited design ><. I realised it’s actually really tough to execute a idea that is etched in your mind. I pictured this dress to be really flowy, flared and pleated. sort of a sleeveless trapeze dress, yea.

The second costume is a hobo-styled one for hip hop. wasnt very satisfactory at all, but I decided to scan it anyway. I wanted an idea of an oversized white tank top with this really tassled like rope-y textured belt with large…what do you call it…ali baba pants. khaki. attitude. hahax.

Then I designed the chair for a lyrical number, but no news about this chair. it’s mirrored to give this really cool dimensional effect when someone is dancing with it.  black and mirrors do the job!

so this is sort of like the first attempt at fashion design, im relieved i got the human proportions rather correct….but no matter how I tried drawing the arms they looked either too scrawny or flabby, so i ditched the idea. now the figures are well, armless, haha. but the trick is to draw the costume first, then add the head and the legs! in the past i used to have these random strikes of inspiration to draw a dress, but I admit, my figures suck too much so I never executed a design well. will definitely try more fashion designing, it’s really fun.
